Leadership abilities – when did we stop thinking for ourselves?

November 10th, 2009 by Paul in Uncategorized, leadership

I saw a video on You Tube the other day after having a conversation with a colleague and friend John (fellow Entrepreneur), that made me laugh hysterically. It is a simple skit that outlines 2 employees on an escalator who are so wrapped up in the day to day, that they’ve stopped thinking for themselves.

Then I actually started to reflect on this and it made me realise that although it’s very funny as a skit – how true it’s become in everyday life. When did we stop listening to our own instincts, our own gut feelings, our own beliefs – and start accepting what other people tell us. When did we simply STOP using common sense???  When did we start allowing other peoples opinions to make us doubt ourselves, our own ability and what choices we make? What do we need to do to build our own confidence and self image and start being and displaying the leadership qualities in our own lives?

Looking in the Mirror

How often would the sales person hear – “I’ll have to check with my friend, my spouse, my partner”
“Does this dress look good on me, is it my colour, does it suit my figure?” Surely we know ourselves if we like something – if it suits us – if it looks good? When did we stop listening to our own instincts? When did we stop trusting our own opinion? In my opinion – leadership qualities and leadership abilities come from first and foremost from being confident in yourself – to think for yourself and to not be concerned about the opinions of others.

To be the leader and to display leadership qualities you need to be committed to whatever it is you have chosen to do in your life, your purpose is something that should ring true for you and only you. It does not matter if no one else understands why you chose to do or not to do something, as long as you’re being true to yourself. Leadership means you do the best and are the best you can be, for you, for your family and your team / colleagues. Displaying honesty, ethics and integrity and above all staying true to your path and compass. Success comes from taking your own steps – one at a time.

So many people think that they have no choice anymore – the news, media, gossip columnists tell them what they should think, how they should look and how they should feel, and sadly I look around me and see evidence that so many people see to have stopped thinking for themselves.
